Learn more about these Indian workouts

The Heritage of Indian Fitness

Mudgar, Sumtola, Gada, and other workouts are deeply rooted in the rich traditions of Indian physical culture, which dates back thousands of years. At the heart of these practices are the akhadas, or traditional Indian wrestling schools, which have played a vital role in training warriors and athletes.

Origins of Akhadas

The concept of akhadas can be traced back to ancient India, around the Vedic period (1500–500 BCE). Initially, these spaces were dedicated to training warriors in various forms of combat and physical conditioning. Practitioners focused not only on building physical strength but also on cultivating mental resilience. Training often included wrestling, traditional games, and the use of various tools, such as wooden clubs (Mudgar) and weighted rods (Sumtola), which were integral to their regimen.

Why Try Indian Workouts?

These workouts are perfect for those seeking a holistic approach to fitness. They not only build strength and flexibility but also promote mindfulness and mental well-being. With roots in ancient traditions, Indian workouts offer a unique blend of physical challenge and cultural enrichment.

Difference between Gyms and Indian Workouts

While traditional gym equipment typically offers two-dimensional movements (up and down or left and right), Indian workouts provide multidimensional benefits through full-range rotational movements. This approach enhances joint strength, mobility, and flexibility, allowing muscles to grow proportionately to your height. Additionally, these exercises strengthen your grip, help prevent joint injuries, promote fat loss, and improve overall body balance.

Why Wood?

Wood is organic and possesses unique medicinal properties. When practitioners train with wooden equipment, these properties are believed to transfer to them during workouts. For this reason, practitioners are encouraged to train with bare hands. The higher the repetitions, the more benefits they gain from the equipment.

A few wood options for these tools:

Mahogany
: Durable and warp-resistant, mahogany is lightweight yet strong, with natural anti-bacterial properties.

Sheesham (Indian Rosewood)
: Dense and shock-resistant, Sheesham features natural oils that protect against pests and decay.

Teak:
Moisture-resistant and durable, teak has natural oils that guard against rot, with a smooth finish for comfort.

Walnut
: A dense hardwood known for strength, walnut offers a rich color and unique grain, ideal for heavier equipment.

The Mudgar

This equipment has various names, including Mudgal and Karlakattai, depending on the region in India.

The Mudgar is a wooden workout tool that replicates the sword and shield used by warriors in ancient times. It has since been adapted for use by wrestlers and farmers.

The Sumtola

This unique piece of equipment is also utilized by wrestlers and grapplers. The practitioner must hold it with both hands at all times. The Sumtola can be thought of as the Indian version of a barbell, but with the grip located within the weight. It allows for two-dimensional movements without the need to adjust the weight. The Sumtola engages the entire body, simulating actions akin to grabbing and throwing an opponent. This equipment's variations enhance joint health, skin condition, bone strength, and overall body balance.

The Gada

The Gada is commonly associated with Lord Hanuman, who wields it as a symbol of positivity. This equipment is now used by wrestlers and grapplers. In today’s fitness landscape, it’s one of the best tools for improving core strength, body balance, and joint durability and elasticity. Because the weight is positioned further from the grip, it offers greater leverage and torque, making it more challenging and effective than the Mudgar. However, starting with the Mudgar is advisable.

The steel mace replicates the Gada in steel, providing a more durable option for multiple users, while wooden equipment is more personal and offers medicinal benefits.
